At Balai Salai, the heart of their cuisine lies in the glorious Daging Salai Masak Lemak. This smoky beef dish is enveloped in a thick, creamy coconut gravy, imparting a mild spiciness that elegantly enhances the rich aromas of the smoked meat. Each bite celebrates a harmonious blend of flavors, making it a highly recommended choice for any visitor. The inclusion of fresh daun kunyit, kubis, and tender bamboo shoots adds layers of texture and taste, while their Siput Sedut Masak Lemak offers an unexpected kick of spiciness.

The restaurant has received glowing reviews for its attention to detail and authenticity. The prices are surprisingly reasonable, adding to the appeal for diners seeking quality without breaking the bank.

As you savor the dishes, don’t overlook the expertly crafted beverages. An Iced Spanish Latte or refreshing Sirap Selasih serves as the perfect partner to counter those lively, spicy tastes, allowing you to enjoy every mouthful without doubt. This is a true hidden gem in Bandar Baru Bangi. Hailing from Kuala Pilah, the Masak Lemak dishes at this restaurant are truly outstanding. I think they’d beat some of the popular spots in Negri Sembilan too. They serve very authentic and tasty version of the Masak Lemak here. Besides the thick coconut cream and chili padi, the gravy is infused with slivers of daun kunyit and tender tapioca (ubi kayu) leaves (?) which lend a subtle bitterness to the dish. Also added are bamboo shoots (rebung). These usually add a somewhat off-putting aroma, but the rebung here as been boiled until tender and did not have that aroma. The chefs have put a lot of effort to get the dish right and I truly appreciate the care that has been put into the food. The Daging Salai Masak Lemak came in a very thick and creamy coconut gravy which had a mild spiciness. This allowed the aromas and intensified flavours of the smoked beef to come through. This is Highly Recommended. The Siput Sedut Masak Lemak on the other hand came in a slightly lighter coconut cream but with more intense chili flavour. The rebung and daun kunyit helped to temper the heat. This was very enjoyable in a sweat-inducing way. Highly Recommended as well. The first taste of the Sambal Ayam was somewhat sweet. This comes from the large amount of caramelised onions used to make the sambal, which was not overly spicy. When paired with the masak Lemak gravy, this made for a great combination. This gets a Highly Recommended as well. The rice sets come with a dollop of chilli sambal, two slices of cucumber and two small crispy fried salted fish. Perfect foil for the Masak Lemak gravy. This may be my favourite Masak Lemak restaurant in the Kajang vicinity currently and I’ll certainly be returning to try more in future. Their seating arrangement upstairs consists of mainly floor seating with a slightly raised platform. This may not be conducive for office workers, old people and those with disabilities. Although it lends a kampung feel, it may not be very practical and they really should consider switching to more conventional chairs and tables. Having said that, you can also opt to dine at the nice cafe downstairs in air-conditioned comfort and with the option for some very nice coffee too. Return visit September 2025: Everything is still as good as before. The Daging Salai Masak Lemak remains the same with thick santan and fiery cili padi. Highly Recommended. I decided to try Udang Masak Lemak Tempoyak Daun Kayu this time and I wasn’t disappointed. The spiciness level was even higher than the beef version. Tempoyak was present but it played a supporting role only to the main stars being the coconut cream and the cili padi. This dish was sweat inducing, but in a very good way. The prawns were not the freshest nor were they cleaned very well, but all that was secondary to the lemak gravy, which was mopped up to the last drop. I was told that they add Daun Gelugor to the dish for some sourness. This is Highly Recommended. Iced Spanish Latte and Sirap Selasih were both good to quell the fiery aftertaste. The Batik Cailebaut cake was somewhat sweet, but this was appreciated after the chilli overdose. Very friendly service by the cafe staff.

I like the taste of lemak Cili api not that spicy.. Ikan keli with kulit rambai is delicious.. Lemak daging salai is nice too only for me the beef slightly hard to chewed.. Price is reasonable.. So far all good..

We ordered the sambal ayam and daging salai. It took almost 30 minutes for our order to arrive. The good news is both dishes tasted just like home-cooked meals — very comforting! The sambal was slightly sweet but it balanced nicely with the sambal belacan on the side. As for the daging salai, the spiciness level was a strong 9/10 (I usually can handle spicy food but this was a bit much for me). I personally wish it was a little less spicy. The only downside was the rice portion. It felt quite small. We finished the rice quickly but still had a lot of lauk left. Hopefully the portion size can be adjusted in the future.

The taste of authentic nismilan food in the city, just superb Alhamdulillah..the beef still has that tangy, smoky taste and the gravy of masak lemak wasn’t too spicy that it simply soothed well with the tongue. For additional spicy, they provided extra sambal to those wanting to have more chillies. The plate is so traditional, bring back fond memory of the past which goes well with this exquisite traditional food at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!

I am quite impressed how they are able to maintain a delicious masakan kampung menus with a modern set-up and a cafe-like ambience. They also have variety of menus including coffee and pastries hence also suitable for tea time or late lunch. The price are very affordable with the portion and taste of pure masak lemak dishes. Definitely will come back and bring my family here. They also have options for those wanting peace and quite with air-cond downstairs, very cafe-like vibe while it's hot and outdoorsy on the upstairs, more suitable for a group of friends to catch up without making other people uncomfortable. This way, they are able to cater to customers who came for different purposes.

Had lunch with my wife here. Absolutely delicious. If you guys want to taste ori “Nogeri” delicacies, this is the place.
